Referee catches Sunday league brawl on camera

You never know what you’re going to get when watching a Sunday league game, but the small crowds that gathered for the top of the table clash between FC Bridge and Ox and Gate certainly got more than they bargained for.The affair was always going to be a fiery one in the Middlesex County Sunday League Division One title race.

FC Bridge Chairman Dan Walsh felt the clash of Sunday League titans was an ideal time to experiment with his new Sunday League “Ref Cam”, to see what kind of footage he could gather for social networking site Eva.

The referee was strapped up, the camera was rolling and FC Bridge got the game underway.

After dominating the first half and missing five or six really good chances, Ox and Gate (red) took the lead after half an hour. Just before the break FC Bridge (yellow/purple) managed to pull it back to 1-1. Ox made it 2-1 shortly after half time but it wasn’t long before Bridge equalised yet again. As the tension increased, tempers began to fray and Bridge had a man sent off for bringing down the last man. Ox made it 3-2 from the resulting penalty. By the 85th minute the score was at 5-3 to Ox and Gate and the Sunday League title race titled back in their favour.

It was then that it all kicked off. Bridge defender Billy Clarke is known for his no-nonsense style of defending and out of frustration he fouled an Ox winger and kicked the ball at him while he was down the ground.

Suddenly, all of the away crowd ran onto the pitch and started throwing punches at the Bridge players. Billy, not one to shy away, got stuck in.

Eventually, the referee managed to calm it all down and after he dismissed two of the players involved in the brawl, the remaining 5 minutes were played without any more violent clashes between players and fans. The game was a classic in every way and rekindled our love for Sunday League football. It ended 5-3 to Ox. Three red cards and eight goals.

FC Bridge’s next fixture is a cup game next week against no other than Ox and Gate. Better get the camera out, lads.
