Hoodies v Hooligans
The Guvnors is a hybrid of Britain’s two most frowned upon – and culturally distinctive social groups, and so sets up a turf war between the young inhabitants of an unknown London housing estate – an ethnically mixed, weakly parented crew of teens wielding switchblades – and the middle-aged former hooligans, the kind of gentlemen who once got stuck in in the away end, and who lived on the estate back in the day.
The films alpha is Mitch (Played by Doug Allen) who lives buried in suburban London, having turned his back on his previous life of casual violence and intimidation as part of a legendary South East London firm. In the modern day he’s the doyen of respectability and quiet confidence, but Mitch used to be a Guv’nor. This film holds a mirror up to Mitch and shows him the monster once again, buried deep in both DNA and psyche, desperate to break out and wreak havoc.
The other side of this violent thriller is represented by Adam Shenko (played by hip-hop star Harley Sylvester of Rizzle Kicks) who leads his pack of head bashing youths with a menacing brand of control and retribution.
The film starts out with Shenko hearing of the once major, old-school top boys who once ruled his manor, and goes in search of ‘The Guvnors’. Shenko’s search leads him to the local boozer which leaves him humiliated after being punched out by an old school, wrinkled ex-pro boxer. The film picks up a bit of momentum when Shenko’s boys decide to take revenge. Mitch hears about it on the grapevine and reunites with his old mob whom he had become estranged, in order to deliver a well-deserved battering to the youthful troublemakers.
